OK, so this blog has been dormant for some time. I'm sorry.

So what's going on? Sunflower rumored to be opening a second location in Falls Church. Vegetate still without liquor. Snakes on a Plane is tanking at the box office. Details as they emerge! Or, sooner.

Washington, D.C.: I know this has been asked every week, but is Vegetate open yet?

Fritz: Okay, just called DJ Dredd, and the final inspection is tomorrow. Assuming all goes well, you'll be able to check out Shaw's new vegetarian restaurant and DJ bar next weekend. Rhome just said, "I'll believe it when I can have a portabello mushroom sandwich." Me too.

Veg DC will try to be there, live on the scene, possibly with camera in tow.

Sadly, the tasty Cafe Dalat, by far the most veggie-friendly Vietnamese restuarant in the Clarendon-Little Saigon area, is closing down at the end of the month, with the owner forced to renovate the building, 'cording to Chowhound. I recommend you go and make sure to try one of the great vegetarian soups-for-two.

In other news, Vegetate is still not open.

Nautical nonsense

Apparently a place called Clare and Don's has moved into ... Clarendon, in the old Red Hot & Blue space. From the owners of Lazy Sundae across the street, it's a "casual seafood joint" with possibly kitschy atmosphere.

Anyway, they somehow bothered to add interesting veggie items to the menu -- vegdc.com reports it offers "creative and tasty vegan dishes including mock Fish and Chips and Buffalo Tofu Wings". Take note, portobello sandwich and pasta primavera purveyors of the world.

No website seems to exist yet, but watch this space for an update...

From Dceiver antagonists the GogBloggers, a Vegetate update:

Washington, D.C.: Any idea of when the upscale vegetarian restaurant, Vegetate, is opening?

Fritz: I'm not sure it's upscale ... but the latest is that there have been (what else?) construction delays, but they should be finished in the next week or so, and then work can start on the interior. Owner Dominic Redd (DJ Dredd) says that they're shooting for mid-to-late June, no earlier than early July.

For me, late-night vegetarian eats and DJ beats can't come soon enough.

In today's Washington Post online chat with sportswriter Thomas Boswell, he claims that outside food is allowed in the stadium:

Reston, Va. - concession comment: Concessions in my opinion were not as bad as everyone said. Anyone who has been to any kind of game at any stadium knows the food is overpriced and underwhelming. My $5 beer and my $4 hot dog were not that great of course, but who cares? My feeling is some of these folks commenting on the concessions prices were used to nickel beer and quart tickets.

Well, this seems to be at odds with the DC Sports Commission's web site and previous Post reporting. This morning I got through to the Commission, who told me the Nats have made an exception and are allowing outside food and bottled water, although no "big buckets of chicken", according to the friendly operator.

Huzzahs all around.

The Moonie Times reports that veggie dogs will be offered at RFK, although vegans are out of luck as they contain egg.

Still, this is good news considering that outside food is banned from RFK by the DC Sports Commission, acting as always in the public interest. Here's the list of what's banned:

Metal, plastic, glass containers of any kind
Backpacks and large bags
Large flags and banners
Poles and staffs (metal, plastic or wooden)
Weapons and illegal substances
Food and Beverages
Professional cameras w/detachable zoom lenses and/or tripods
Pets
Fireworks
Whistles

It's unclear what food not enclosed in metal, plastic or glass has in common with any other item on this list.

Let's see. Poles and staffs, fireworks, pit bulls, machine guns: all good for impaling or otherwise maiming others. Banners can block some views. Whistles? I don't want to see any whistles.

The camera rule is likely a baseball-wide intellectual property issue. Does Camden Yards allow outside food? Yes. Feel free to call your friendly local sports commission/greedhead bureau at 202-547-9077 and inquire.

If anyone tries their veggie dog, let us know.

Where do DC vegetarians go for online news gathering/kibbitzing?

We've got VegDC offering comprehensive listings, but only once-a-month features. There's the Vegetarian Society of DC, which brings people together with events and a paper newsletter, but not much online excitement. There may even be an antiquated listserv floating around, for all I know.

At long last, Veg DC: The Blog is your source for info and debate on new restaurants, fake meat sightings about town, gossip, and the like.
